21 UK Festivals Cancelled, Postponed And Over 100 At Risk

As the anticipation for the summer festival season builds, a sobering reality looms over the UK festival landscape. Recent research published by the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) reveals that a staggering 21 UK Festivals have either cancelled, postponed, or permanently dissolved ahead of the 2024 season. This worrying trend has prompted concerns that many more festivals are at risk of disappearing unless immediate action is taken.

The AIF, representing festivals across the country, has sounded the alarm, warning that the number of festival cancellations this year is poised to surpass the previous year’s total. In 2023, 36 events were cancelled in total, and with 21 already gone before the season has even begun, the situation appears dire.

Among the casualties of this wave of cancellations is the beloved Nozstock: The Hidden Valley, which has announced its permanent closure this July. Additionally, festivals like Standon Calling, Neighbourhood Weekender, NASS, Doune The Rabbit Hole, and Tokyo World have also been forced to abandon their plans.

“Without intervention, it’s expected that the UK could see over 100 festivals disappear in 2024 due to rising costs. Without having had a single steady season since the pandemic in which to recover, the country’s festivals are under more financial strain than ever,” AIF said in a statement.

The root cause of this crisis lies in the financial strain facing festival organizers. The pandemic-induced disruptions, coupled with rising costs and slower-than-expected ticket sales, have pushed many festivals to the brink of collapse. To address this urgent issue, the AIF has launched a new campaign called “5% For Festivals,” urging the government to implement a VAT reduction for the sector. By reducing VAT to 20% and maintaining it at that rate for three years, organizers believe many festivals can be saved, providing vital breathing room for the industry to rebuild and innovate.

John Rostron, CEO of AIF, emphasized the critical need for intervention, highlighting the potential loss of over 100 festivals in 2024 without immediate action. The proposed VAT reduction, he argues, is a targeted and temporary measure that could stave off disaster for countless festival businesses.

“We have done the research: a reduction of VAT to 5% on festival tickets over the next three years is a conservative, targeted and temporary measure that would save almost all of the festival businesses that are likely to fall by the wayside this year and many more over the years to come. We need this intervention now,”

The challenges facing UK festivals are further exacerbated by increased overheads, slow ticket sales, and economic factors such as the cost-of-living and energy crises. Efforts to drive attendance, including fundraising initiatives aimed at supporting young festival-goers, have been met with limited success, underscoring the severity of the situation.

As the festival industry grapples with these daunting challenges, urgent action is needed to safeguard its future. The fate of beloved cultural events hangs in the balance, and concerted efforts are required to ensure that the vibrant tapestry of UK festivals continues to thrive for years to come.
